Number bonds
Each Numicon shape represents a different number and has a unique pattern of holes, making it easy to compare sizes and combinations.
By physically combining shapes—for example, placing a 3-shape and a 2-shape next to a 5-shape—children can see and explore how different pairs of numbers add up to the same total, reinforcing their understanding of number bonds in a clear, engaging way.

Number patterns
Numicon can be used to create simple number patterns by arranging the shapes in repeating or growing sequences. Because each Numicon shape increases in size and number of holes, children can easily see and feel the pattern. For example, laying out the 1-shape, 2-shape, 3-shape, and so on creates a clear growing pattern. Alternatively, alternating shapes like 2-shape, 4-shape, 2-shape, 4-shape helps children recognize repeating patterns.
1:1 correspondence
Numicon is ideal for teaching 1:1 correspondence because each shape has a specific number of holes that match its value. Children can count the holes and match them with the corresponding numeral to support number recognition.
This activity was taught using Numicon stickers on cars and car park spaces labelled with numerals - it really engaged my car-crazy boys!

Doubles
Numicon can be used to teach doubles by helping children visually and physically combine two of the same shapes. For example, placing two 3-shapes side by side shows that double 3 is 6. The consistent size and pattern of each shape make it easy to see how the numbers combine, reinforcing the concept of doubling.
This activity was taught whilst exploring minibeasts and insects with the children. They were learning about butterflies and their symmetrical wings which fit in perfectly with doubles.
